Walking as a Child of the Light

Published December 9, 2025

My favorite Christmas carol is Silent Night. When I hear this song, I immediately feel peace, comfort, and love. The gentle melody and simple lyrics remind me of the quiet beauty of the holiday season and the importance of slowing down to reflect on the meaning of Christmas. When I hear Silent Night, I have warm childhood memories of singing this song during Christmas Eve service to candlelight that I continue to this day.

Searching about this carol led me to its origin in an Austrian church in the 1800s during Christmas Eve mass. The church’s organ was damaged by flooding at the time, and a poem was provided and sung to guitar, which evolved into the popular Christmas carol we sing today. It reminds us that something beautiful can be shared from unexpected circumstances, in the quiet and light. So come, “...let us walk in the light of the Lord.” - Isaiah 2:5

Reflect on God's Word

Isaiah 2:1 - 5 (VOICE)

Take a Moment to Pray

Holy God, In this season of waiting and hope, we turn our hearts toward Your promised light. Isaiah gives us a vision of all people streaming toward Your mountain, seeking Your wisdom, Your peace, and Your ways. We long for that day, Lord — when weapons become tools for growth, when fear gives way to trust, and when Your light guides every step we take.

As we prepare for the coming of Christ, kindle in us a deeper desire to walk as children of the light. Shape our lives so that Your brightness shines through us — in our words, in our choices, and in the way we love. Where there is heaviness, bring comfort. Where there is darkness, bring clarity. Where there is division, sow Your peace.

And as we journey through Advent, keep our hearts moving steadily toward the night of Christ’s birth. Help us arrive at Christmas Eve with wonder, ready to lift our candles and our voices to sing Silent Night — not just as a tradition, but as a prayer of trust in the One who brings light into every shadow.

Teach us to seek Your paths and to walk in them with joy. Let the light of Christ rise in us and through us, drawing others toward Your grace.

Come, Lord Jesus. Lead us in Your light, now and always. Amen.
