True Beauty

In a world that often emphasizes outward appearances, it can be easy to forget where true beauty lies. Society bombards us with images and messages that suggest our worth is tied to how we look, what we wear, or how we present ourselves to others. However, the apostle Peter teaches us a different perspective on beauty—one that is rooted in the heart and spirit.
True beauty, according to Scripture, is not about external adornment but about the inner qualities that reflect God's character. A gentle and quiet spirit, humility, kindness, and love are the attributes that make us truly beautiful in God's eyes. These qualities are not fleeting or superficial; they are enduring and precious.
When we focus on cultivating our inner beauty, we align ourselves with God's values and priorities. We become more like Christ, who exemplified perfect beauty through His love, compassion, and selflessness. As we grow in our relationship with God, we begin to see ourselves and others through His eyes, recognizing the inherent worth and beauty in every person.
The Rev. Dr. Howard Thurman, one of the greatest spiritual leaders of our time, offers profound reflections on humanity and our relationship with God in a beautiful collection of his meditations and prayers:
"Whatever may be the tensions and the stresses of a particular day, there is always lurking close at hand the trailing beauty of forgotten joy or unremembered peace." (Meditations from the Heart)
His book Meditations from the Heart, which would be a good addition to anyone’s library, features fifty-four of his most well-known meditations and addresses themes such as prayer, community, and the joys and challenges of life. As we start a new year, I find Thurman’s wisdom to be helpful because he emphasizes the importance of quiet reflection and introspection as essential practices for spiritual growth. He believes that by centering down and listening to the still, small voice within, we can find clarity, purpose, peace, and yes, even true beauty.
Is it ever too late to cultivate a deeper connection with the source of life itself and to live with greater compassion, grace, and authenticity? Of course not! May this year bring each of us to a greater awareness of the Holy Spirit working within our hearts and minds.
Read 1 Peter 3:3-4 (NIV)
"Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight."

Pray
Almighty God, Source of All Beauty,
Grant me the grace to see the beauty within myself and others. Help me to cultivate a heart that is kind, a spirit that is gentle, and a mind that is open. May my actions reflect the love and compassion that reside within me because of Your grace. Guide me to nurture the light within me, so that it may shine brightly and inspire those around me to see Your love more clearly.
In the name of Christ, I pray. Amen.
