The Gospel in Our Own Words
Nicodemus comes to Jesus with questions, and Jesus responds not with a lecture but with a lived testimony. “I speak only of what I
know by experience; I give witness only to what I have seen with my own eyes.” That line from The Message translation feels like a gentle nudge toward a different kind of evangelism—one that doesn’t begin with arguments or airtight explanations, but with the simple honesty of our own encounters with God.
Jesus doesn’t pressure Nicodemus into belief. He doesn’t shame him for not understanding. Instead, he invites him to look—to see the
love of God lifted up, offered freely, healing and restoring. And then comes the heartbeat of the gospel: God loved the world so much that God gave. Not to accuse. Not to condemn. But to help. To put things right again.
Maybe that’s where our witness begins too. Not with a script, but with the places where we’ve seen God put something right in us. Not
with a polished elevator pitch, but with the quiet stories of how love has found us, steadied us, or carried us through. When we share these stories with our neighbors—naturally, humbly, without agenda—we’re doing exactly what Jesus does here: giving witness to what we’ve seen with our own eyes.
Evangelism, then, becomes less about convincing someone with a tract or giving testimony as one might do in a court of law. Instead, it is more about revealing our heart and having the courage to be vulnerable with others in the moment. Less about having all the “right” answers and more about naming the grace we’ve actually experienced. Our neighbors don’t need a sales pitch; they need a friend who can say, “This is where I’ve seen God at work in my life. What about you?”
That kind of sharing builds bridges. It honors the other person’s dignity and starting point. And it trusts that God is already at work
long before we open our mouths.
Digging Deeper into the Word
Jesus invites Nicodemus to trust what God is revealing through him—love made visible and lifted up for the healing of the world—so that all who look to this love with openness can find real, lasting life.

Take a Moment to Pray
God of generous love,
You came not to condemn but to heal, not to shame but to restore. Teach us to witness to our faith in that same spirit. Help us notice where your grace is moving in our lives and give us the courage to share our stories with humility and joy. Make our conversations places of curiosity, compassion, and connection. And as we speak of what we’ve seen, may your love be lifted up in us, drawing all people toward life that is whole and lasting.
Amen.
