Love Revealed in the Company We Keep
On the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13 - 35), Luke’s story reminds us that revelation often comes this way: not in isolation, but in the presence of others who help us see what we could not see alone.
We witnessed something similar during this year’s 2026 World Cup. Across the tournament, the most moving moments weren’t only the goals — they were the collective awakenings. Teams whose identity became clear only when they leaned into one another. Supporters whose joy was amplified because it was shared. Nations that discovered unexpected unity in the stands and on the pitch.
Cape Verde’s run became one of those revelations. Their strength was found in one another—courage drawn from community, identity shaped by shared belief. And their story resonated beautifully with the anchor film of our July sermon series, Next Goal Wins, where American Samoa’s transformation came not from individual heroes but from the slow, faithful work of belonging on the team. Both teams showed the world what Emmaus teaches us: we reveal God’s love most fully in community.
Christ still shows up this way— in the conversations that open our hearts, in the meals that gather us, in the teams, families, and churches that help us recognize grace we had missed.
May we walk with one another long enough, gently enough, faithfully enough, that Christ is revealed in our midst—and our own identity becomes clearer in the company we keep.

Make us a community where Christ is recognized— in our conversations, our compassion, and our courage. Guide us toward the next goal you set before us, and let us pursue it together, with joy.
