Generation to Generation
One of my favorite parts of the Christmas season is decorating the Christmas tree and taking a walk down memory lane with each ornament. Whether it is a Peanuts ornament that sings, or some mangled craft that my brothers or I made, each of them tells a story and brings back fond memories.
My favorite decoration without a doubt, though, is the angel with curly strawberry blonde hair that sits atop the tree. It has been in my family for over fifty years, picked out by my mom’s sister Patty the year before she passed from childhood cancer because it looked like her. I obviously never met Patty, but looking up at the tree I know her. I know the light she brought into her family. I know the light that Angel shines onto all who encounter her. I know the joy in the darkness that that particular angel brought to her family and brings to my family. I know and love Patty because I know and love those who love her.
Reflect on God's Word
Mary and Elizabeth rejoice together in God’s promises, reminding us during the holidays that faith and joy are best nurtured when shared across generations of family, where stories, blessings, and hope are passed down and celebrated anew.
Luke 1:39 - 46 (NLT)
Take A Moment to Pray
God of promise and presence, as Mary and Elizabeth shared joy across generations, we too give thanks for the ways You knit our families together in faith and memory. Each Advent, our ornaments lifted high upon our trees remind us not only of Christ’s coming, but also of those who have gone before us — grandparents, parents, siblings, and friends whose love still shines in our lives. May these precious reminders call us to rejoice in Your faithfulness, to cherish the stories handed down through the years, and to live as heralds of hope and peace for generations yet to come. Amen.

Breath of Heaven was originally written by Chris Eaton, but Amy Grant wanted to record it and asked Chris if she could rewrite some of the lyrics from a woman's perspective, namely Mary. Chris agreed. So, this is Amy's version. The images are from the wonderful movie "The Nativity Story." Click on the image below to enjoy!
