Away in a Manger

Away in a Manger

One of my favorite musical groups is Celtic Woman.  I got to see them perform when they first started with their original group with my sister at Wolf Trap. Every Christmas, I put on Christmas music to get in the mood for the magic of the season. I listen to albums like, The Nutcracker, Kenny G. Christmas Album, and Celine Dion's, These are Special Times -- and, of course, my favorite Celtic Woman: A Christmas celebration!

My favorite song is "Away in the Manger," which I've sung for our annual Candles, Carols, and Cookies event. I love the version that Celtic Woman has put together.  It's very emotional and soothing, especially when talking about a baby who is rocked in Mary’s arms by this melody in order to deliver hope for a nation. It makes me feel like you're transported to the scene of the event where the King of Kings was born. As the story is narrated through the carol you can imagine the story coming to life far, far away in a manger.

Reflect on the Word

John the Apostle proclaims that God’s love is revealed in giving His Son to bring eternal life, light, and salvation to all who trust Him, while those who reject Him remain in darkness by their own choice.

John 3:16 - 21 (Message)

Take a Moment to Pray

Gracious God,

In the quiet of the manger, where Your Son lay with no crib for His bed, we are reminded of the humility of His birth and the depth of Your love. The carol sings of a baby resting in Mary’s arms, and in that tender scene we glimpse the hope You sent into the world.

You so loved us that You gave Your only Son—not to condemn, but to save. In Him, light breaks into our darkness, and grace covers our fear. Just as the melody of Away in a Manger soothes our hearts, Your Word assures us that whoever trusts in Jesus will find eternal life.

Lord, help us to live as children of the Light. When shadows tempt us, draw us back to the manger, where love was born and hope was cradled. May our lives reflect the gift of Your Son, shining with compassion, truth, and joy.

We pray that the peace of Christ, who came so gently yet so powerfully, will rest upon us today. And may we carry that peace into the world, proclaiming with our words and actions: Love has come, and His name is Jesus.

Amen.
